Shopify product CSV: a short field guide

Use this with the local CSV checker to find likely file problems, then review Shopify’s import details and test the result in your store. A clear checker report does not predict an import outcome.

Formats this checker covers

Choose an English product CSV saved as comma-separated UTF-8, up to 15 MB. Put Shopify product headings on the first row. For new products, Shopify requires a Title column; add URL handle when there are variants. For updates, include both columns. If an update includes variant fields such as SKU or Price, include Option1 name and Option1 value too. Shopify product CSV format · Shopify import and size guidance

The checker recognizes current product headings, common older headings (with a warning), market headings such as Price / Europe, and product metafield headings. Shopify documents older heading compatibility, market columns, and product metafields; variant metafields are outside product CSV import/export. Shopify heading and metafield guidance

For a product with variants, use its first row for product details, then keep the same handle on later variant rows and leave the later titles blank. Shopify also describes extra image rows with the same handle. See the multi-variant sample CSV; its example image URLs are placeholders and have not been tested for reachability. Shopify row layout

What a clear report cannot tell you

This checker tests CSV structure and selected product fields. It does not inspect your store, existing products or variants, market setup, metafield definitions or values, or whether an image URL is reachable. Shopify requires external image URLs to be publicly accessible and documents import failures from invalid product references; those need store or network context. A blank price or tracked quantity may get a warning: Shopify’s format guide describes defaults, while its troubleshooting guide also lists related blank-value errors. The checker cannot settle that difference for a particular import. Back up, review the import details, and inspect the imported products afterward.
