Before the import

Common product variant CSV errors

Compare these small before-and-after files with your own product CSV, then run the live checker again. Each “before” block produces the named checker finding; each “after” block has no findings in the stated mode. These are rule examples, not verified Shopify imports.

For a product with variants, Shopify says to put product details on its first row and repeat the same URL handle on later variant rows while leaving later titles blank. Its current format guide requires Title for new products and URL handle when adding variants. Shopify product CSV format (accessed 2026-10-08).

1. Two variants use the same option values

Give each variant of one handle a distinct option combination. Shopify lists duplicate options as a product CSV validation error. The checker reports row 3, Option values: “This variant option combination already appears on row 2 for the same handle.” A later row can leave the option name blank after the first row established it; changing the value to M makes this pair distinct. Before · new products

Title,URL handle,Option1 name,Option1 value,Price
Canvas tee,canvas-tee,Size,S,19.00
,canvas-tee,,S,21.00

After · new products

Title,URL handle,Option1 name,Option1 value,Price
Canvas tee,canvas-tee,Size,S,19.00
,canvas-tee,,M,21.00

2. A second option is filled before the first

Fill Option1 value before using Option2. Here the checker reports row 2 for both the missing Option1 value and the second option appearing before a first value. Shopify describes option names and values as the fields that form each variant. Shopify product CSV option fields (accessed 2026-10-08).

Before · new products

Title,URL handle,Option1 name,Option1 value,Option2 name,Option2 value,Price
Canvas tee,canvas-tee,Size,,Color,Red,19.00

After · new products

Title,URL handle,Option1 name,Option1 value,Option2 name,Option2 value,Price
Canvas tee,canvas-tee,Size,S,Color,Red,19.00

3. An update includes variant data but omits its option columns

For an update with SKU or Price, include both Option1 name and Option1 value with the matching variant values. The checker reports a row 1 dependency error for the “before” header. Shopify warns that omitting those option columns while updating variant fields can remove existing variants; compare against a store export before importing. Shopify update dependencies and overwrite behavior (accessed 2026-10-08).

Before · updates

URL handle,Title,SKU,Price
canvas-tee,Canvas tee,TEE-S,19.00

After · updates

URL handle,Title,Option1 name,Option1 value,SKU,Price
canvas-tee,Canvas tee,Size,S,TEE-S,19.00

Changing an existing option value can create new variant IDs. Confirm the option values and variant IDs against your store backup; this checker has no access to them. Shopify import and overwrite guidance (accessed 2026-10-08).

4. A variant price contains a currency symbol

Enter only a non-negative numeric value in Price. The checker reports row 2, Price, for $19.00; 19.00 clears that finding. Shopify’s field table says to omit currency symbols. A blank price is different: the checker warns because Shopify’s format guide describes a default while its issue guide lists a blank-price error. After · new products

Check the file, then the import

Use the checker to locate likely CSV issues, and the product CSV guide for supported fields. If a finding does not explain Shopify’s message, follow the troubleshooting steps.

The checker cannot verify actual Shopify import outcomes or store-dependent behavior. It cannot inspect existing products, option conflicts, market setup, metafields, or the final variant IDs. Back up product data, review Shopify’s import details, and inspect the products afterward. Shopify import steps and backup guidance (accessed 2026-10-08).
